Bio:
I'm an LA artist thats enjoys painting moments from my favorite movies, comics and video games. Basically I make geek art. I also do commissions and enjoy a life of too many things going on and a horrible lack of focus.
Note: Super Emo Friends was a project that was simple and really fun. Prints were sold out in about a week and I had a crazy time mailing them out all over the world. From Hollywood to Ireland. I was totally shocked how quickly they went viral. 5x7s are secretly for sale if anyone is interested.

I haven't known J for a long time but in the short time I've spent with him at work , I feel like he's had an effect on my artistic psyche. His Super Emo Friends project is more than just familiar characters and a witty line. The mixture of cute/comic book/hero/villian/sadness makes for a sweet series of images that make sadness look silly (or heroic depending on your influences). We've seen these characters re-imagined plenty of times but I personally have never seen their issues depicted so effectively. Three hour long movies are made about these character, when in the end its all really just summed up by "I Miss Daddy." It's as if J captures the human condition* with these characters, and he does it in such a minimal way that you might overlook it for fear of being naive. Truth is super heros are just people too, and they got people problems, just like you and me. Maybe I am looking to far into his idea but I feel like the fact that I even thought anything at all means a whole lot all on its own.

*Human Condition: That thing we all deal with that involves being born, living, then dying. Somewhere in there we are happy, sometimes sad, and we always seem to be searching for something that isn't really attainable by our own definitions. The general struggle of a human and their meek existence.
